Alibaba Cloud's Qwen-Image-3.0 opens to all users at 0.18 yuan per image, claiming the top domestic spot on Arena.ai's text-to-image leaderboard.

Alibaba Cloud opened Qwen-Image-3.0 to all users on its Qwen AI platform Monday, pricing image generation from 0.18 yuan per image and claiming the top domestic ranking on Arena.ai's text-to-image leaderboard.
The Arena.ai leaderboard, a crowdsourced evaluation platform widely used across the AI industry, placed Qwen-Image-3.0 first among Chinese models for text-to-image generation, according to Alibaba Cloud's announcement.
The release includes two tiers: Qwen-Image-3.0-Pro, the flagship edition, and Qwen-Image-3.0-Standard, both available via API on the Qwen AI platform. International developers can access the models through QwenCloud. The 0.18 yuan starting price per image places the service at the low end of the AI image generation market.
The launch extends Alibaba's AI product portfolio as the company pushes to monetize its cloud and AI investments. Alibaba shares climbed 6.15 percent to HK$124.20 in Hong Kong trading Monday, extending a rally tied to the broader Qwen model family, which includes the recently unveiled Qwen3.8-Max with 2.4 trillion parameters.
The image generation segment has become a key battleground in the AI race, with OpenAI's DALL-E, Anthropic's Claude, and Google's Imagen competing for developer mindshare. Alibaba's entry at 0.18 yuan per image undercuts many Western competitors on price while offering comparable quality, according to the Arena.ai ranking. The crowdsourced platform's text-to-image leaderboard has become a reference point for developers evaluating model quality, making the top domestic ranking a meaningful signal for adoption.
The Qwen-Image-3.0 launch follows Alibaba's broader AI push this week. The company unveiled Qwen3.8-Max on Monday, a 2.4 trillion-parameter model that activates only 95 billion parameters per request using a mixture-of-experts architecture. Qwen3.8-Max ranked fifth globally on Arena.ai's text tasks leaderboard with a preliminary score of 1,496, trailing only Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and several Claude Opus variants. For vision tasks, the model ranked second globally with a score of 1,305, behind only Claude Fable 5 at 1,318.
Qwen's Competitive Positioning
Alibaba's strategy of open-weight releases and aggressive pricing has made Qwen one of the most widely adopted open-source model families. The company plans to release Qwen3.8-Max's open weights next week, marking the first open-weight release of a Qwen Max-class model. This follows the pattern set by DeepSeek, whose open-weight models reshaped AI pricing in early 2025.
The image generation segment specifically has seen rapid commoditization. Alibaba's 0.18 yuan per image pricing compares favorably to Western competitors that typically charge $0.02 to $0.10 per image for API access. For Chinese developers, the local pricing advantage is even more pronounced given currency differences. The Qwen-Image-3.0 API is available through the Qwen AI platform, with international access via QwenCloud, giving Alibaba a distribution channel that spans both domestic and overseas developers.
Investor Implications
Alibaba's AI investments are beginning to show commercial traction. The company's cloud division has been the primary beneficiary, with AI-related cloud revenue growing at triple-digit rates in recent quarters. The Qwen model family has also been integrated into Alibaba's newly launched AI agent product, Qwen Office, expanding the potential monetization surface. Qwen3.8-Max's API pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens positions it well below many leading proprietary models, a strategy designed to capture developer share.
Alibaba shares, trading at roughly 15x forward earnings, have rallied on AI momentum. The stock gained 6.15 percent to HK$124.20 in Hong Kong on Monday, building on a 4.65 percent gain from Friday that analysts tied to a reported Moonshot AI chip deal. The Qwen-Image-3.0 launch adds another product to the portfolio but faces competition from Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, which launched last month with 2.8 trillion parameters and is considered the most capable open model to date. Independent evaluations of Qwen-Image-3.0's quality will sharpen the picture once the model's weights become available.
