Pony.ai Delivers 100+ Robotaxis to Launch Commercial Fleet
On March 18, autonomous driving firm Pony.ai delivered an initial batch of more than 100 of its seventh-generation Robotaxis to Guangzhou Chenqi Mobility Technology, a major ride-hailing operator in China. The delivery signals the start of a large-scale commercial deployment on Chenqi's OnTime Mobility platform in Guangzhou. The partnership structure allows Pony.ai to focus on its core technology by licensing its "Virtual Driver" autonomous system for recurring revenue. Chenqi Mobility, in turn, takes responsibility for vehicle asset ownership, dispatching, and daily operations, establishing a scalable, asset-light framework for expansion.
Gen-7 Tech Slashes Autonomous Kit Costs by 70%
The deployment utilizes Pony.ai's Gen-7 vehicle, which is based on the GAC AION V model. This new platform marks a critical step toward profitability, reducing the cost of the autonomous driving hardware kit by 70% compared to the prior generation. The vehicles are built with automotive-grade components designed for a lifespan of up to 600,000 kilometers. Importantly, Pony.ai has already proven the model's financial viability, achieving positive unit economics with the Gen-7 platform in pilot operations across Guangzhou and Shenzhen, two of China's largest tier-1 cities.
Market Strategy Targets 3,000 Vehicles by End of 2026
This delivery is part of a broader strategy to rapidly scale its commercial footprint, with Pony.ai aiming to exceed a fleet size of 3,000 vehicles by the end of 2026. The company is leveraging strategic integrations with Tencent's WeChat and mobility platforms to access a user base of over one billion. While the operational news is positive and analysts maintain a consensus "Buy" rating with an average price target of $22.36, the company's stock has recently trended lower, trading at $12.30. Investors will be closely watching the upcoming earnings report on March 26 for signs that the company's financial results can match its technological and operational momentum.
