(Bloomberg) -- Snap Inc.'s recently formed smart glasses unit, Specs, will use Qualcomm Technologies Inc. chips in its forthcoming augmented reality devices, a multi-year deal that solidifies the hardware strategy for a 2026 product launch. The partnership aims to fuse Snap's camera and AR expertise with Qualcomm's powerful, energy-efficient processors.
"This collaboration is a pivotal step in our journey to bring stylish, functional, and advanced AR glasses to the world," a spokesperson for Specs said in a statement. "Qualcomm's leadership in XR and mobile computing makes them the ideal partner to help us execute on our vision."
The agreement will give Snap's hardware division access to Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon XR chipsets, which are specifically designed for virtual and augmented reality devices. Financial terms of the deal, announced on Friday, were not disclosed. The collaboration is a significant design win for Qualcomm, reinforcing its leadership in the emerging AI wearables market against competitors like Apple and MediaTek.
For Snap, the deal provides a critical component for its ambitious push into hardware, a field where it has previously launched several versions of its Spectacles camera glasses to mixed commercial success. By securing a partnership with a leading chip designer, Snap can focus on software and user experience, while leveraging Qualcomm's deep expertise in mobile processing and connectivity. This could positively impact both SNAP and QCOM stocks by solidifying their strategic positions in the emerging AI wearables and augmented reality market.
