Vertical Aerospace completed the first public electric vertical take-off and landing transition flight at the Farnborough International Airshow, demonstrating how its four-passenger Valo aircraft can operate without a runway.
"This week at Farnborough showed that electric aviation is moving from promise to progress," Stuart Simpson, chief executive officer of Vertical Aerospace, said. "From our historic public transition flight to new customers, partnerships and government support, we've demonstrated that commercializing a new class of aircraft takes more than breakthrough technology — it takes an ecosystem."
The UK government is in advanced discussions on a support package worth up to £10 million ($13.5 million) to establish Vertical's first full-scale production facilities in the country. The company also signed a memorandum of understanding with UK Export Finance to explore future export and customer financing support, and secured £3.4 million in government backing for the ECLiPSE programme developing next-generation charging and thermal management technologies for electric aircraft.
Vertical holds about 1,500 pre-orders from customers including American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow, GOL and Japan Airlines across four continents. The company targets type certification in 2029, competing with Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation in the race to commercialize electric air taxis for urban and airport-shuttle routes.
Partnerships and Government Support Build the Ecosystem
During the airshow, Vertical joined Honeywell Aerospace's Project VERTI-GO, a major European initiative to help safely integrate eVTOL aircraft into shared airspace — Europe's equivalent of the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. The company signed new customer agreements with Sigma Air Mobility, an advanced air mobility operator and member of the Luxaviation Group, and with VIC Properties to explore premium urban air mobility services in Portugal.
Vertical also expanded its autonomous defence capabilities through a partnership with Near Earth Autonomy, while the Ministry of Defence confirmed its interest in the company's eVTOL, hybrid-electric and autonomous technologies for potential dual-use applications. On the regulatory front, the company established a strategic collaboration with Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation and signed a separate memorandum of understanding with Cluster2 Airports Company, a leading Saudi airport operator.
The company's manufacturing plans are designed to support future production scale-up as Vertical moves from flight testing toward certification and entry into service. Vertical combines partnerships with leading aerospace companies including Honeywell, Syensqo and Sonaca, with its own proprietary battery and propeller technology. Its leadership team, drawn from Rolls-Royce, Airbus, GM and Leonardo, has previously certified and supported more than 30 different civil and military aircraft and propulsion systems.
Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL) shares have faced pressure because of the capital-intensive path to certification, but the Farnborough demonstrations and government backing reduce risk in the production timeline. The company's proprietary battery and propeller technology, combined with partnerships from tier-one aerospace suppliers, place it alongside Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation in the eVTOL commercialization race. With 1,500 pre-orders and a 2029 certification target, the next milestone will be securing the full £10 million UK production package and progressing through the structured flight-test programme.
