Tencent opened WorkBuddy to more than 100 outside partners on Sept. 2, adding nine co-branded devices and 30-plus industry apps as it builds an operating layer for autonomous agents.

Tencent is opening its WorkBuddy AI assistant to outside hardware makers and software vendors, betting that a shared agent foundation — not a single stronger tool — will win enterprise customers in China's crowded AI market.
"True productivity doesn't depend on how strong a tool is, but on how many capabilities it can connect and how many scenarios it can enter," Liu Yi, vice president of Tencent Cloud and head of Tencent CodeBuddy & WorkBuddy, said. "We hope to turn WorkBuddy into an operating system for the Agent era."
The open platform, live at open.WorkBuddy.cn since Sept. 2, admits more than 100 first-batch partners. Nine co-branded hardware products from Plaud, Rokid, Insta360, iFLYTEK, Anker, Manner and JD Jingzao span smart glasses, microphones, recording cards and headphones, while more than 30 industry applications connect across 20-plus sectors including finance, legal, healthcare and education.
The launch is Tencent's clearest attempt to turn its AI stack into a revenue platform rather than a standalone assistant. WorkBuddy, released in March, has shipped more than 50 version updates and claims deployment across more than 50 industries. In Guangdong, the assistant went live in August across provincial government units including the medical insurance bureau; in Shandong's Laizhou, more than 6,000 school teachers use it as an AI teaching aid. Tencent's Hunyuan Hy4preview model joined the assistant on Aug. 28, adding agent capabilities that Tencent said created queues on the first day.
Hardware Makers Skip Building Their Own AI
The pitch to device makers is that they no longer need to build AI in-house. A smart-glasses maker keeps its microphones and cameras while WorkBuddy handles understanding, planning and execution; accounts, tasks, memories and outputs sync across glasses, phones, PCs and the web. Walking into a meeting wearing the glasses triggers transcription, minutes, to-do lists and follow-up emails through one chain, and interview notes become searchable memories that users can query later.
For developers, the platform opens three capabilities — Skill, Expert and Connector — with the connector supporting both MCP and CLI protocols to reach external services. Tencent said payment and distribution channels are being accelerated to reward developers and enterprises for their domain expertise.
Industry Apps Broaden the Reach
The 30-plus connected applications span finance, SaaS, law, healthcare, education, public welfare and design, built by partners including Guangfa Securities, Tencent Health, Peking University Law Database, Beisen and Meitu Design Studio. Tencent's public-welfare arm built a "Public Welfare Buddy" that consolidates 11 scenario capsules and 42 scenario capabilities across 15 intelligent agents, covering funding applications, due diligence and charity-law interpretation. In education, WorkBuddy runs 33 experts and 15 teaching skills on Tencent's Penguin Teacher Assistant.
Lin Zuolu, head of the WorkBuddy open platform, said the barrier of "an agent can do things" has already been crossed; the harder task is keeping agents running across devices, systems and scenarios. "We break down the capabilities into three paths — hardware, industry applications and developers — so every industry and every partner can bring Buddy into their own scenarios," Lin said.
For investors, the open platform is a bet that Tencent can capture a slice of hardware and industry-software revenue while spreading its agent infrastructure across China's enterprise market. IFLYTEK (002230.SZ), a co-branded hardware partner, fell 1.989 percent on the day, while parent Tencent (00700.HK) faces rivals pushing similar enterprise assistants. Tencent did not disclose platform fees, revenue-share terms or a monetization timeline, saying only that payment capabilities are being built out.
