Key Takeaways:

TAL Education Group reported net income of $408 million for the fiscal first quarter ended May 31, a 1,204% surge from $31.3 million a year earlier, as the smart learning solutions provider benefited from strong revenue growth and a sharp increase in investment-related income.
"The results reflect solid execution across our businesses," Alex Peng, TAL's president and chief financial officer, said. "Through ongoing refinement of our offerings and operational improvements, we've made steady progress in enhancing learning experiences while reinforcing our foundation for sustainable, high-quality growth."
Revenue climbed 31.9% to $758.4 million from $575 million, with gross margin expanding to 57.8% from 54.9%. Income from operations rose to $137.2 million from $14.3 million, while operating costs grew just 10.8% to $621.2 million, well below the revenue growth rate. Selling and marketing expenses fell 4.8% to $172 million. The bottom line was further boosted by $405.2 million in other income, primarily from fair value fluctuations in certain investments, compared with $9.5 million a year earlier. On a per-ADS basis, net income was 74 cents basic and 73 cents diluted, versus 5 cents for both in the prior-year period.
The Beijing-based company ended the quarter with $2.87 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, down from $3.24 billion at the end of February. Deferred revenue rose to $1.22 billion from $882 million, signaling future revenue recognition. TAL's board extended the company's share repurchase program by 12 months, authorizing up to $393.7 million in buybacks through July 2027. Between April 23 and July 28, TAL repurchased about 1.23 million common shares for $40.7 million.
The massive earnings beat, driven partly by volatile investment gains rather than core operations, raises questions about the sustainability of TAL's margin expansion. Investors will watch the company's next quarterly report for signs of continued operating leverage and whether the elevated other income level can be maintained.
