Peter Brandt, head of Factor LLC, opened a long Bitcoin position on Aug. 20 after a technical breakout on CME futures pushed the contract toward $72,335.
"I bought the breakout for better or worse," Brandt said, explaining that "the completion of the H&S bottom changed that." The trader had earlier assigned a "60/40 chance" the inverted head-and-shoulders pattern on the daily chart of CME Bitcoin futures (BTC-056 contract) would resolve to the downside, citing the prolonged formation of the right shoulder and the broader downtrend.
The breakout followed Bitcoin's move above resistance near $64,000, where the asset established solid support and ended a multiweek consolidation. During today's session, the futures contract reached approximately $72,335, posting a net daily gain of $2,585. Bitcoin climbed above $72,500 Thursday, reaching an 11-week high as U.S. stocks weakened and Treasury yields rebounded.
The shift from one of the most closely followed futures traders in the industry carries weight for Bitcoin's technical outlook. Brandt had previously acknowledged "there was a reason to have expected a downside move in Bitcoin," but the pattern completion changed his assessment. The inverted head-and-shoulders formation, rare in the current market cycle, triggered strong price acceleration once the neckline was breached.
Brandt's reversal drew criticism on social media, with some market participants questioning the utility of a 60/40 statistical model applied to a single trade. Responding, Brandt cited the law of large numbers in risk management, arguing that a small statistical edge may appear insignificant in one isolated trade but creates consistently positive expectancy across a large sample of trades.
The move above $72,500 opens the door to further upside if the level holds as support, with the $64,000 zone now serving as a potential floor. The broader crypto market has been watching Brandt's positioning closely, given his track record in commodity and futures markets spanning more than four decades. His public flip from bearish to bullish could influence other trend-following traders who look to established voices for confirmation of technical signals.
For Bitcoin specifically, the breakout comes as the asset trades well above its 200-day moving average, with the inverted head-and-shoulders pattern suggesting a measured move that could extend beyond recent highs. The CME futures contract's net daily gain of $2,585 represents one of the largest single-session advances in recent weeks, reflecting the conviction behind the breakout. The pattern's completion also comes at a time when geopolitical tensions, including threats of economic action against Iran, have pushed Treasury yields higher, adding a macro layer to the technical setup. If Bitcoin holds above $72,500 in the coming sessions, the next resistance zone could come into focus, with the $64,000 level serving as a critical support floor on any pullback.
