Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI seeks Beijing's approval for a Hong Kong listing valued at $50 billion, with an IPO unlikely before 2027.
Two sources familiar with the matter said the listing is unlikely to proceed before 2027, while another source said the process could move faster if regulatory issues are resolved, the Financial Times reported over the weekend.
Corporate disclosure filings show Moonshot AI reorganized its mainland China entity from a limited liability company into a joint-stock company, the first step toward a listing. The company is coordinating with a group of bankers and lawyers to resolve issues relating to its overseas investor base. According to one investor, Moonshot AI this week told existing investors it is still unwinding its offshore entity and has yet to decide how offshore holdings will transfer to an onshore entity.
Moonshot AI recently completed the first tranche of two consecutive fundraising rounds and is not under immediate financial pressure to list. The first round valued the company at about $30 billion, while the second round is expected to value it at $50 billion upon completion.
The shareholder registry updated in July lists the National Social Security Fund, local government guidance funds from Shanghai and Guizhou, and the state-owned flagship media People's Daily as investors. Moonshot AI previously received investments from Alibaba (BABA-W 09988.HK) and Tencent (00700.HK).
The notice to investors came after media reports stated that Moonshot AI planned to conduct an IPO within six months. The company has not disclosed an offer price, deal size, cornerstone investors, or lead underwriters for the potential listing.
A $50 billion valuation would make Moonshot one of the largest AI listings in Hong Kong, testing demand for Chinese AI assets. Investors will watch for Beijing's regulatory approval and the resolution of the offshore entity unwinding, which determine the listing timeline.
