GE Vernova Inc. is moving data center power protection to the medium-voltage level with a new uninterruptible power supply, targeting AI facilities whose electricity demand is straining grids and onsite power systems.
"Reliable, uninterrupted power is foundational to every energy-intensive industry, and AI data centers are raising that requirement to a new level of scale and complexity," Philippe Piron, chief executive of GE Vernova's Electrification segment, said.
The MV-UPS sits between a facility's incoming electricity supply and its critical loads, letting one coordinated system protect a larger portion of the electrical infrastructure while preventing sudden swings in demand from passing back to the grid or generation assets. GE Vernova expects commercial shipments to begin in mid-2027, with the first project energized by the end of that year. The system combines power-conversion technology with advanced controls and integrated energy storage to hold voltage and frequency steady during fluctuations or outages.
The launch expands GE Vernova's data center portfolio, which already includes gas turbines, substations, transformers, switchgear and energy management systems. The company is also developing solid-state transformer technology to bring power conversion closer to computing racks.
Traditionally, UPS protection is applied at low voltage after electricity has been stepped down, requiring multiple individual systems near critical equipment. GE Vernova's approach creates a single stability block between the facility and its power supply, which the company says can simplify downstream electrical infrastructure and help customers meet power-quality and grid-connection requirements.
The shift comes as AI data centers draw electricity in large, rapidly changing bursts. Hyperscalers and colocation operators are racing to secure power, and grid operators are grappling with the volatility that AI workloads introduce. GE Vernova's medium-voltage design is intended to absorb those swings before they reach the wider grid, a capability the company says is becoming more important as AI facilities require substantial and rapidly changing amounts of electricity.
GE Vernova enters a data center power market where Schneider Electric, Eaton and Vertiv dominate low-voltage UPS and power-distribution gear for hyperscalers. Moving protection to medium voltage differentiates GE Vernova's offering, though the company has not disclosed pricing or capacity specifications for the MV-UPS.
Data center power demand has become a defining constraint on AI expansion. Utilities across the United States have reported record interconnection queues, and equipment makers from turbine suppliers to transformer manufacturers have cited multi-year backlogs. GE Vernova has positioned its electrification business to capture that demand, and the MV-UPS extends its reach into the power-protection layer historically dominated by electrical equipment specialists.
GE Vernova shares fell 0.95 percent on the announcement. The company's data center business has been a key growth driver as utilities and equipment makers benefit from the AI infrastructure buildout, with demand for gas turbines and grid equipment rising alongside data center construction. The first MV-UPS project is scheduled to be energized by the end of 2027, giving GE Vernova a runway to capture orders as operators seek more reliable, scalable and grid-compatible power systems.
