Bitcoin's Bollinger Band squeeze is tightening to its narrowest point in weeks, and the resolution — likely within 48 hours — will determine whether the next leg targets $68,000 or $63,000.
Bitcoin is pressing against its Bollinger Band ceiling at $65,755 with MACD momentum flat at zero, signaling an imminent breakout within 48 hours. The coin changed hands at $66,208 as of 14:00 UTC, down 0.47% on the day, after the 200-period exponential moving average held as a floor near $65,000 following a crash to the $53,000–$54,000 range earlier this month.
"The persistent negative Coinbase Premium — now stretching past 900 hours — reflects a broader bout of risk aversion rather than a deterioration in crypto-specific fundamentals," Daniela Hathorn, senior market analyst at Capital.com, said. U.S. institutional buyers have been unwilling to pay a premium over global retail prices since May, according to the Coinbase Premium Index, even as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told lawmakers the Clarity Act is at the "1-yard line" and urged Congress to pass it before the August 7 recess.
The technical picture is a study in compression. The Average Directional Index sits at 19.5 — firmly in "no trend" territory on a scale where readings below 25 signal weak conviction. The Relative Strength Index at 59.9 is the clearest positive signal: above the neutral 50 line without being stretched into overbought territory above 70, leaving room for upside momentum to build. The Bollinger Band %B reading of 0.87 means price is 87% of the way between the lower and upper bands, pressing directly against the $65,755 ceiling. Open interest across major exchanges stands at $28.5 billion with a neutral funding rate of 0.003%, per Coinglass — neither longs nor shorts are paying a premium to carry positions, eliminating one classic squeeze trigger.
The $66,728 level is the line in the sand
A daily close above $66,728 — the immediate resistance just above current price — would confirm the squeeze resolved to the upside, opening a path to $68,000 within the same week. The bullish case rests on three pillars: the 200 EMA held its support, RSI is above 50 with room to run, and the Clarity Act is closer to becoming law than at any point this year. Bernstein analysts maintain a $150,000 year-end target, acknowledging the current level is "ambitious in context of the market correction."
The bear case carries more technical weight. The death cross — 50-day EMA below the 200-day EMA — remains active on the daily chart. ADX at 19.5 means no real trend momentum is behind this bounce. On Myriad, the prediction market built by Decrypt's parent company Dastan, 64.6% of traders bet Bitcoin hits $55,000 before $84,000 — consistent with the negative Coinbase Premium streak and the weak ADX reading. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index at 33 reflects caution, not panic, which is its own kind of impasse.
A rejection at $65,755 followed by a loss of the $65,000 support zone would trigger the bear scenario. The next technical floor with substance sits at $63,000 — a level that would represent a 4.8% decline from current prices and likely trigger cascading long liquidations given the crowded positioning.
