VW Targets China's Mass Market with $35,000 XPeng-Powered SUV
Volkswagen has opened presales for its first vehicle co-developed with XPeng, the ID.UNYX 08 electric SUV, signaling a major offensive in the competitive Chinese market. Starting on March 26, the vehicle is priced from RMB 239,900 to RMB 299,900 (approximately $34,500 to $43,500). The model, also referred to as 'Yuzhong 08', is built on an 800V architecture that allows for ultra-fast charging, replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in about 20 minutes.
Buyers can choose between two CATL-supplied LFP battery packs, 82.4 kWh or 95 kWh, which provide a CLTC range of up to 730 kilometers. The SUV is offered in a single-motor rear-wheel-drive configuration producing 230 kW and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version with a combined output of 370 kW. This combination of price and performance positions the ID.UNYX 08 to compete directly with local bestsellers like the Xiaomi SU7 and Li Auto L6.
XPeng Partnership Key to VW's Strategy to Reclaim China Lead
The launch of the ID.UNYX 08 is a critical element of Volkswagen's "In China, for China" strategy, designed to reverse market share losses. After its 15-year reign as China's top-selling car brand ended in 2023 at the hands of BYD, Volkswagen has focused on leveraging local innovation to regain its footing. This partnership brings a vehicle from conception to production in just 24 months, a pace Volkswagen refers to as "China Speed."
The collaboration deeply integrates XPeng's advanced technology. The SUV comes standard with XPeng's L2++ assisted driving system, powered by its Vision-Language-Action (VLA 2.0) model. The system utilizes a sensor suite of 26 components, including 11 cameras, and dual chips providing a total computing power of 1500 TOPS. By adopting XPeng's sophisticated driver-assist technology, Volkswagen aims to match the advanced smart features offered by domestic EV brands and re-establish its dominance in the region.
