Indian AI startup Sarvam AI is nearing the completion of a significant funding round of up to $350 million, a move that will value the company at over $1.5 billion and highlights increasing investment from global tech leaders in the country's burgeoning AI sector. The deal underscores a broader trend of building sovereign AI capabilities outside of the US and China.
"The participation of major players like Nvidia and Amazon is a strong validation of Sarvam AI's approach and the potential of the Indian AI market," said a person familiar with the deal, who asked not to be named as the details are private.
The funding round, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, is expected to be in the range of $300 million to $350 million, according to the sources. Prosperity7 Ventures, the venture capital arm of Aramco, also participated. This capital infusion will lift Sarvam AI's valuation to between $1.5 billion and $1.55 billion, making it one of the most valuable AI startups in the region.
For investors, the deal solidifies the strategic importance of emerging AI ecosystems. For Nvidia and Amazon, the investment provides a strategic foothold in a fast-growing market and hedges against geopolitical concentration in the AI supply chain. The funding is expected to intensify competition for AI talent and enterprise customers in India, potentially boosting valuations for other startups in the space.
