Copa Holdings SA (NYSE: CPA) reported first-quarter revenue of $1.05 billion, a 17 percent increase year-over-year that beat analyst expectations, as strong passenger demand and cost discipline drove record profitability.
"Our first quarter results reflect a strong demand environment across the region, continued discipline in cost execution and our relentless focus on delivering operational excellence for our passengers," Pedro Heilbron, Chief Executive Officer, said on the company's earnings call.
The airline generated a record net profit of $212.5 million despite rising fuel costs. Management guided for continued capacity growth but warned that a projected 80 to 90 percent year-over-year jump in second-quarter jet fuel prices would pressure margins, with only about half of the increase expected to be recovered through higher fares.
The Panama-based airline's performance was robust across key operational metrics. Revenue per available seat mile (RASM) improved 2.7 percent to 11.8 cents, while cost per available seat mile (CASM) excluding fuel declined one percent to 5.8 cents, reflecting cost-containment strategies. On-time performance for the quarter was 91.6 percent with a flight completion factor of 99.7 percent, positioning Copa among the industry's top performers.
The company boosted shareholder returns, repurchasing $45 million of its own stock and approving a quarterly dividend of $1.71 per share. During the quarter, Copa took delivery of two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, ending with a fleet of 127. The airline also announced a new order for 40 additional MAX jets for delivery between 2030 and 2034.
The strong earnings beat and disciplined cost control show Copa's ability to navigate a volatile fuel environment. Investors will watch the second-quarter results closely to see if the company can successfully offset rising fuel costs as management projects, with full recovery expected by year-end if positive yield trends persist.
