Chinese automaker Chery Automobile has entered a global strategic partnership with Nvidia Corp. to develop and deploy so-called Physical AI, significantly deepening the chipmaker's penetration into China's competitive electric vehicle market across 3 distinct sectors.
The official announcement confirms the two parties will jointly develop solutions for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), in-cabin AI experiences, and robotics. The collaboration aims to accelerate the development and production of Chery's next-generation intelligent vehicles.
As part of the agreement, Chery will use the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion platform as the foundation for its upcoming L3/L4 autonomous vehicles. The automaker will also develop a new generation of intelligent in-cabin experiences using the NVIDIA DRIVE platform, which powers infotainment, driver monitoring, and other digital cockpit features.
For Nvidia, the partnership is a significant win that locks in a major Chinese automaker to its DRIVE ecosystem, pressuring competitors in both the automotive and semiconductor industries. For Chery, leveraging Nvidia's market-leading hardware and software stack provides a crucial accelerator for its ambitions in the highly competitive intelligent vehicle space, particularly within the vast Chinese domestic market.
Nvidia's Expanding Automotive Ecosystem
This partnership highlights the success of Nvidia's platform-based strategy. Rather than just supplying chips, the company provides a comprehensive reference architecture—DRIVE Hyperion—that includes a full sensor suite and the necessary compute hardware and software. This allows automakers to speed up development, and it solidifies Nvidia's central role.
The ecosystem extends to sensor providers as well. For instance, Aeva Technologies, a developer of FMCW LiDAR, is the reference LiDAR sensor on the DRIVE Hyperion platform, according to company reports. This means that while Chery has selected the Nvidia platform, it will likely integrate sensors from other companies like Aeva that are part of Nvidia's pre-validated ecosystem, creating a multi-layered business-to-business opportunity. This strategy allows Nvidia to benefit not only from its direct relationship with Chery but also from the network of component suppliers integrated into its platform.
