Vanguard Group added 83,093 MicroStrategy shares worth $8 million to its Mid-Cap Value ETF, bringing total holdings in the Bitcoin proxy to $209 million.
The purchase was disclosed in a portfolio update for the Vanguard Mid-Cap Value ETF (VOE), which tracks the CRSP US Mid Cap Value Index. MicroStrategy, now rebranded as Strategy, holds about 499,096 BTC on its balance sheet, making it the largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally, according to the company's most recent disclosures.
The $8 million addition represents a roughly 4 percent increase to Vanguard's existing MSTR position. The ETF's total stake of $209 million makes MicroStrategy one of its top 10 holdings by weight within the fund, which had about $12 billion in assets as of the latest filing. Vanguard's Mid-Cap Value ETF first added MSTR shares in prior quarters and has steadily increased its position as MicroStrategy's Bitcoin treasury has grown.
The increased allocation from Vanguard, one of the world's largest asset managers with more than $9 trillion in assets under management, shows growing institutional comfort with Bitcoin exposure through traditional equity vehicles. For investors restricted from direct crypto purchases, MSTR shares offer a regulated alternative that tracks Bitcoin's price performance with added corporate leverage from the company's debt-financed Bitcoin acquisition strategy. The move could prompt other index fund managers to increase their MSTR allocations, potentially driving further institutional inflows into the Bitcoin proxy trade as more traditional allocators seek crypto exposure without holding digital assets directly.
