The UK's medicines regulator on Monday authorized Eli Lilly's pill Foundayo (orforglipron) for weight management and type 2 diabetes, a European first.

The approval strengthens Lilly's position in the fast-growing obesity market and intensifies competition with Novo Nordisk as oral GLP-1 treatments reach Europe. Mounjaro, Lilly's blockbuster injection, set an NHS spending record last year when English doctors prescribed nearly 600 million pounds ($770 million) of the drug, the most the health service has ever spent on a single medicine in a year.
Pharmacies are likely to sell the prescription-only pill within weeks, with the rival Wegovy tablet currently priced between 50 and 150 pounds a month from private online providers. Eligibility mirrors the Mounjaro jab: patients must be obese with a body mass index of 30 or higher, or overweight with a condition such as high blood pressure, and follow a diet and exercise program. Almost a third of the UK population is obese, widening the addressable patient pool.
NHS availability will depend on a cost-effectiveness review by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which may impose stricter rationing criteria. The approval signals Lilly expects oral GLP-1 demand to accelerate across Europe, and investors will watch for further regulatory decisions in the region and updated peak-sales guidance on the company's next earnings call.
