AI data center power demand is reshaping electricity markets, redirecting capital toward independent power producers and off-grid generation.
Data centers packed with Nvidia chips draw 100 to 300 kilowatts per rack, up to 20 times traditional servers, lifting independent power producers that can reliably supply electricity.
"Data points during the quarter were rock-solid, with cloud revenue inflecting higher at both Microsoft and Amazon," Jefferies analyst Blayne Curtis said, citing Nvidia's demand outlook ahead of its Aug. 26 earnings.
Interconnection queues of three to seven years for connecting data centers to the public grid are pushing hyperscalers toward independent power producers such as Constellation Energy and Vistra, which sell into competitive wholesale markets. GE Vernova holds a $163 billion backlog for natural gas turbines, while Bloom Energy supplies fuel cells for off-grid installations.
The four largest hyperscalers — Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta — are expected to spend about $700 billion on AI chips in 2026, and SpaceX has committed to an all-Nvidia buildout worth $150 billion to $250 billion by the end of 2027. That demand is redirecting capital toward companies that can supply power on demand.
Transmission bottlenecks are pushing hyperscalers to bypass the public grid entirely. GE Vernova's $163 billion turbine backlog and Bloom Energy's fuel-cell deployments reflect unprecedented demand for on-site power, the analysis shows. Nvidia holds roughly 90 percent of the data center GPU market, tying its chip sales directly to the electricity required to run them.
Small modular nuclear reactors from Oklo and NuScale Power are expected to reach commercial availability by the 2030s, though high costs and lengthy development timelines temper near-term upside. Utility-scale battery storage could also redefine long-term power generation as hyperscalers lock in supply through multi-year contracts.
The power crunch gives independent power producers multi-year revenue visibility through long-term power purchase agreements, a structural growth driver for Constellation Energy and Vistra. Investors will watch Nvidia's Aug. 26 earnings for updated data center demand signals that set the pace of new power contracts.
