Wall Street favors GE Vernova over CSX heading into July 22 earnings, with 30 Buy ratings, zero Sells, and 37% AI-model upside versus CSX's 10%.
GE Vernova carries 30 Buy ratings and zero Sells while CSX has two Sell ratings, with analysts seeing 37% upside for the energy equipment maker versus 10% for the railroad. Both report Q2 2026 results Wednesday, July 22.
"GE Vernova's order momentum and backlog expansion give it a clearer near-term catalyst than CSX, which faces freight-demand uncertainty," said analysts at J.P. Morgan in a recent note.
GE Vernova trades at $1,079.18 against a consensus target of $1,221.48, while CSX at $50.11 sits essentially at its $50.63 consensus. AI-model targets project $1,484.04 for GEV and $55.18 for CSX. Polymarket assigns an 85.5% probability that GE Vernova's Q2 orders exceed $18 billion, following Q1 orders of $18.3 billion that rose 71% organically. CSX has no active prediction market and has beaten revenue estimates just once in the past five quarters.
The divergence matters because both report on the same day — GE Vernova before the open, CSX after the close — and the gap in analyst conviction could drive divergent post-earnings moves. GE Vernova's 65.1% year-to-date gain still leaves headroom to targets, while CSX's 38.2% gain has nearly closed the gap.
Analyst Breakdown by the Numbers
GE Vernova's sell-side consensus shows 30 Buy ratings and eight Hold ratings with zero Sells, an unusually clean setup for a stock that has already rallied 65% this year. CSX shows 15 Buy ratings, six Hold ratings, and two Sell ratings. Both carry "Moderate Buy" consensus, but GE Vernova has no bears.
Composite sentiment scores reinforce the gap. GE Vernova scores 66.22 (bullish, medium confidence) with social sentiment at 68 out of 100 and news sentiment at 64.44. CSX scores 61.18 (bullish, lower confidence) driven almost entirely by news with insufficient social data. Insider activity also diverges: CSX has net selling across six recent transactions, while GE Vernova shows no such pattern.
Risks on Both Sides
GE Vernova's risks include a rich 31 P/E, wind-segment EBITDA losses of roughly $400 million, and tariff exposure. CSX faces freight-demand softness, insider selling, and a revenue track record that has missed in four of the past five quarters. GE Vernova raised its full-year 2026 revenue guidance after the Q2 order surge, lifting margin expectations as well, according to the company.
The guidance raise signals management expects electrification and grid investment demand to accelerate. Investors will watch Wednesday's earnings call for updated segment margins and the trajectory of the backlog, which expanded by more than $13 billion quarter-over-quarter in Q1. For CSX, the key question is whether freight volumes can reverse a trend that has produced four revenue misses in five quarters.
