CSPC Pharma (01093.HK) won US FDA approval for clinical trials of SYS6037, a monkeypox mRNA vaccine co-developed with the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Microbiology.
The company announced the approval in a filing, describing SYS6037 as a Category 1 preventive biological product. The vaccine is a multi-antigen monkeypox vaccine encoded by a single mRNA strand, designed to prevent monkeypox infection.
The single-strand mRNA design streamlines the technology pathway, supporting quality control during production and significantly reducing manufacturing costs, the company said. This could enhance vaccine controllability and accessibility across markets.
Shares of CSPC Pharma fell 0.748 percent on the day, with short selling of $121.46 million representing a 15.914 percent ratio. The stock trades on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, where it has been a constituent of the Hang Seng Index.
The FDA clearance marks a milestone for CSPC Pharma's infectious disease pipeline and follows the company's broader push into mRNA-based vaccines. The company has not disclosed the trial design, patient enrollment targets, or expected timeline for initial data.
The approval places CSPC Pharma in a competitive global monkeypox vaccine market. Bavarian Nordic's JYNNEOS remains the only FDA-approved vaccine for monkeypox, while Moderna has been advancing its own mRNA-based candidates. The 2022 monkeypox outbreak, which spread to more than 100 countries and prompted emergency vaccination campaigns, highlighted the need for additional vaccine options.
For CSPC Pharma, the FDA approval provides a potential boost for its vaccine segment, which has been a strategic focus alongside its oncology and cardiovascular portfolios. The collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences gives the company access to academic research capabilities in mRNA technology.
The approval also carries significance beyond CSPC Pharma. It represents a notable step for China's vaccine industry as it seeks to expand internationally, with the company navigating the FDA's regulatory framework for US market entry. The company's ability to secure FDA clearance for a Category 1 biological product could inform how other Chinese biopharmaceutical firms approach US regulatory pathways.
The next key milestone will be the initiation of US trial enrollment and subsequent safety and efficacy data readouts. Clinical trial success is not guaranteed, and the company has not provided a timeline for when results might be available.
