Mastercard has joined the XRP Ledger Hackathon as a sponsor, backing a 36-hour developer event in New York on Oct. 24-25. The hackathon, organized by XRPL Commons in partnership with the XRP Ledger Foundation, brings developers to build and launch projects on the XRP Ledger ahead of Ripple's Swell conference.
XRPL Commons, the Paris-based nonprofit organizing the event, confirmed the sponsorship on X. The organization has run similar events before, including a Paris hackathon in April 2026 carrying 12,500 euros and a virtual buildathon with a 50,000 XRP prize pool.
The competition splits across four tracks. Protocol Innovation covers amendments, client implementations and core tooling on the ledger itself. Agentic Finance targets autonomous agent transaction rails operating at machine speed. Lending & Borrowing focuses on the XRP Ledger Lending Protocol under XLS-66 and Single Asset Vaults under XLS-65. The "Why Not" category serves as an open track for anything that does not fit the other three. Ledger has committed $10,000 in hardware wallet bounties, split across $4,000 for Core Integrations, $4,000 for Agentic Finance and $2,000 for Creative Minds. A separate Core Dev Bootcamp runs Oct. 20-22 for C++ developers working on the rippled codebase.
The event lands three days before Swell, scheduled for Oct. 27-29 at The Shed in Manhattan. This is the first year Swell merges with the Apex developer summit into a single program.
A deepening institutional relationship
Mastercard's sponsorship follows a series of steps into the XRP ecosystem. In November 2025, Ripple announced a collaboration with Mastercard, WebBank and Gemini around Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin. The partnership came after Gemini launched an XRP edition of its Mastercard credit card in August 2025, offering up to 4 percent back on some purchases.
In June 2026, Mastercard said its network would support settlement with regulated stablecoins including RLUSD, listing the XRP Ledger among supported blockchain networks. The company completed its acquisition of BVNK, a Ripple partner, in March 2026. Ripple was selected for Mastercard's CBDC Partner Program in 2023, and in May 2026, Ripple, JPMorgan, Ondo Finance and Mastercard participated in a pilot using the XRP Ledger for a cross-border redemption of Ondo's tokenized US Treasury fund.
RLUSD surpassed $2 billion in market cap as institutional engagement grew, according to recent reports. The XRP Ledger itself reports roughly 14,300 daily active users, a figure that explains why developer recruitment through hackathons remains a priority for the ecosystem.
What to watch
The hackathon's Agentic Finance track aligns closely with Mastercard's stated interest in machine-speed transaction rails for autonomous agents — a payments problem that sits at the intersection of traditional finance and crypto infrastructure. Registration runs through Luma with host approval required, and only work completed during the 36-hour window counts toward judging.
If standout projects emerge, Mastercard's presence could help connect XRPL innovations with the broader payments industry, potentially accelerating the path from hackathon prototype to production deployment.
