Former President Donald Trump intensified his campaign against Rep. Thomas Massie on Wednesday, appearing at a rally in the congressman's northern Kentucky district to endorse primary challenger Ed Gallrein. Calling the incumbent a "disaster" and "disloyal," Trump's direct intervention transforms the May 19 primary into a significant test of his influence within the Republican party.
The contest has become a focal point for major political donors. Super PACs aiming to oust Massie, including MAGA KY and the RJC Victory Fund, have deployed approximately $3.6 million in advertising, according to AdImpact data. These groups are reportedly backed by prominent financiers such as Paul Singer and John Paulson. In response, Massie’s campaign and allied PACs have spent about $3.1 million, bringing total outside spending to $6.7 million in a race where Massie previously won primaries with about 75% of the vote in 2022 and 2024.
Feud Signals GOP Fractures on Fiscal and Foreign Policy
The schism between Trump and Massie highlights deepening ideological fractures within the GOP. Trump's opposition is largely a response to Massie’s dissenting votes on key administration priorities, including the 2025 tax and spending law, which Massie opposed on deficit grounds. The congressman also led a successful bipartisan effort to force the release of files related to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a measure Trump initially opposed before signing it into law.
Massie has framed his opposition not as disloyalty to the party but as adherence to core conservative principles, such as fiscal responsibility and non-interventionist foreign policy, including his opposition to the Iran war. For investors, the outcome of this primary serves as a key indicator. A successful ousting of Massie would signal Trump's continued control over the party's direction, potentially solidifying shifts in fiscal, trade, and regulatory policy in a future administration.
