Qatar Halts Production, Wiping Out 33% of Global Helium Supply
A conflict in Iran has triggered a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, forcing Qatar to shut down its three helium production facilities. This move has abruptly cut global helium supply by approximately one-third, sending shockwaves through industries reliant on the critical gas. Helium is an irreplaceable component in semiconductor manufacturing, where it is used for cooling wafers. The supply shock, combined with an associated spike in oil prices to $111 per barrel, raises significant concerns over rising production costs and operational stability for the entire technology sector.
South Korea's Chip Sector Faces 64.7% Supply Disruption
The crisis poses a direct threat to South Korea's formidable semiconductor industry. According to the Korea Trade Association, the country imported 64.7% of its helium from Qatar in 2025, making it exceptionally vulnerable to the Qatari shutdown. The blockade has severed the primary maritime route for these shipments. This event also highlights the region's concentrated supply chain risks, as South Korea also depends on Israel for 97.5% of its bromine imports, another key material for chip etching. While bromine supply is not yet affected, the helium shortage exposes the fragility of sourcing critical materials from geopolitically sensitive areas.
Firms Tap Inventories as Long-Term Costs Mount
In response to the sudden shortage, major manufacturers like SK Hynix are relying on existing helium inventories and actively seeking alternative suppliers to mitigate immediate disruptions. This provides a short-term buffer, but it is not a sustainable solution. Analysts warn that if the conflict and the resulting blockade persist for more than two weeks, the ensuing chaos could take months to resolve. Companies would face escalating procurement costs and extended lead times, even if they can switch to new, validated suppliers. A protracted crisis risks delaying data center investments and could even lead to global factory shutdowns.
