Deliveries Fell 18.8% as Pure-Electric Strategy Faltered
Li Auto is recalibrating its strategy for 2026 following a difficult 2025 that saw its ambitious expansion into pure-electric vehicles (BEVs) fall short of expectations. The automaker delivered a total of 406,300 vehicles for the year, a significant 18.81% decline from its 500,500 deliveries in 2024. This performance missed the company's adjusted annual target of 640,000 units, with Li Auto achieving only about 63% of its goal. The underperformance stemmed from a strategic misstep where BEV models like the MEGA failed to generate the expected sales volume, putting pressure on overall delivery numbers and prompting a full-scale strategic review.
New L9 SUV Spearheads Comeback with 800V Platform
In response, Li Auto is refocusing on its dominant position in the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market. The centerpiece of this 2026 comeback is a completely revamped L9 flagship SUV, which represents a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple annual update. The new L9 is designed to eliminate competitive disadvantages by incorporating an 800V high-voltage platform and 5C fast-charging technology. It will also debut the company’s first self-developed M100 autonomous driving chip. Powertrain enhancements include a 70 kWh battery enabling over 400 kilometers of pure-electric range. With an internal sales forecast exceeding 100,000 units for the new L9 alone, the company is betting heavily on the model to restore its market standing.
Li Auto Restructures to Separate Premium and Volume Models
Supporting the product pivot is a significant organizational and strategic restructuring. For 2026, Li Auto will simplify its product offerings by reducing the number of available configurations (SKUs) and making key technologies like 5C charging a standard feature across its L-series lineup. This move aims to lower consumer decision costs and leverage economies of scale to protect profit margins. Internally, the company has divided its product organization into two distinct lines: one, led by Tang Jing, will manage high-end models like the L9 and MEGA to drive brand image and profitability, while a second line, led by Li Xinyang, will focus on volume models like the L6 to expand market share. The company's BEV plans are now on a defensive footing, with only one new model slated for 2026 as Li Auto conserves resources and waits for a more opportune moment to re-enter the segment.
