Amazon Rolls Out £19.99 Monthly Alexa+ Service to Monetize UK AI
Amazon announced on March 18 that its generative AI assistant, Alexa+, will launch in the United Kingdom beginning March 19. The upgraded service introduces a significant shift in the company's monetization strategy. It will be available for free during an initial "early access" period, after which it will cost £19.99 per month for users without a Prime subscription.
For the millions of existing Amazon Prime members in the UK, the Alexa+ features will be bundled into their current subscription at no additional charge. This dual-pronged approach aims to both generate direct subscription revenue and enhance the value proposition of the Prime ecosystem, encouraging wider adoption of Amazon's core membership program.
Agentic AI Aims to Revitalize Device Engagement
The new Alexa+ is positioned as a more capable, "agentic AI" designed to perform complex, multi-step tasks in the real world. Beyond simple commands, the assistant can now handle end-to-end logistics, such as checking a user's calendar, suggesting a restaurant, and completing a booking through partners like OpenTable. Amazon has tailored the service for its most engaged global market by training it on 40 different UK and Irish dialects.
This technology refresh comes as smart speaker sales have reportedly declined. Amazon hopes the enhanced functionality will drive new hardware purchases and re-engage users. While the company reported a 50% increase in smart home control usage with Alexa+ in the US, the service's initial launch there was met with mixed reviews citing inconsistency. Early UK demos revealed minor but notable localization issues, such as using American phrasing for football scores, indicating that further refinement is still needed.
