Alstom Inks £330M Deal to Modernize ScotRail Fleet
Alstom S.A. announced on March 19, 2026, that it has secured contracts valued at £330 million (€380 million) to service and upgrade trains for Scotland's national rail operator, ScotRail. The deal, made in partnership with rolling stock owner Beacon Rail, solidifies Alstom's foothold in the UK's rail services market.
The agreement is composed of two primary components. The largest is a 10-year Technical Support and Spares Supply Agreement (TSSSA) worth approximately £250 million for 22 Class 222 trains. The second is an £80 million contract with Beacon Rail for an extensive refurbishment of the same fleet. The comprehensive modernization will include new seating, LED lighting, upgraded WiFi connectivity, modern passenger information systems, and enhanced accessibility and safety features, including the installation of defibrillators on every train.
10-Year Support Contract Secures Revenue Until 2036
The technical support agreement provides Alstom with a predictable, long-term revenue stream, running until March 2036 with an option to extend to 2042. This contract ensures the reliability and performance of the Class 222 fleet as it transitions into service in Scotland. The work will support engineering and technician roles across several Scottish maintenance locations, including Polmadie, Haymarket, and Inverness.
For ScotRail, the investment is a key part of its strategy to deliver a more reliable, comfortable, and sustainable railway. Officials expect the modernized trains to improve the passenger experience significantly, encouraging a shift from cars to rail travel. The upgrades align with both ScotRail's and Alstom's sustainability goals, focusing on inclusive economic growth and climate action.
