Zcash (ZEC) climbed 5% on May 1, 2026, as the privacy-focused cryptocurrency neared the $400 mark, a level that could trigger further gains if a cluster of short positions is liquidated.
The move higher is being driven by a potential short squeeze, according to on-chain analysis. A significant number of derivative traders have placed bets that the price of ZEC will fall, and a sharp price increase could force these traders to buy back their positions, adding to the upward momentum.
This price rally to just under $400 comes even as data shows weekly trading volume has been slowing. The dynamic suggests the current price action is influenced more by derivatives market positioning than by broad-based spot buying. BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes recently identified Zcash as a token he might purchase in the current liquidity environment, adding a layer of speculative interest.
A decisive break above the $400 psychological and technical resistance level could attract more buyers and fuel a sustained uptrend. However, failure to overcome this barrier may result in a price rejection and a short-term downturn. Further supporting its long-term outlook, the THORChain protocol has announced that groundwork is in place for a future Zcash integration, which would allow for native cross-chain swaps without relying on wrapped tokens.
