Volkswagen and its Chinese partner Xpeng Inc. have priced their first jointly developed electric vehicle, the ID. UNYX 08, from RMB 229,900 ($31,700), intensifying the price war in China’s crowded SUV market. The launch on April 16 marks a critical test of the German automaker's strategy to regain ground in the world's largest EV market through a local partnership.
"The ID. UNYX 08 is a significant milestone for the Volkswagen-Xpeng partnership, combining German engineering with Chinese innovation," a Volkswagen spokesperson said in a statement. "We are confident this model will be highly competitive."
The mid-to-large-size battery electric SUV has an official guide price ranging from RMB 229,900 to RMB 289,900. The vehicle is based on Xpeng's G9 platform, but with Volkswagen's design and engineering input. The launch comes as competition in the Chinese EV market, particularly in the SUV segment, is at an all-time high, with rivals like Tesla, BYD, and Nio offering models in a similar price bracket.
The success of the ID. UNYX 08 is pivotal for both companies. For Volkswagen, it's a chance to reverse its declining market share in China. For Xpeng, it's an opportunity to increase volume and revenue through a powerful partner. The vehicle's sales performance in the coming months will be a key indicator of whether this international partnership can effectively challenge the dominance of local Chinese brands.
