Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced a goal to increase the network's Layer 1 computation scaling by a factor of 1000, a move aimed at tackling one of the blockchain's most persistent challenges. The remarks were made at the April 21 opening of the ETH Hong Kong Hub, Asia's first long-term, physical community center for the Ethereum ecosystem.
"A new generation of developers is gaining unprecedented opportunities," Buterin said in a fireside chat, pointing to the maturation of Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proof technology and the role of artificial intelligence in lowering development barriers. He stated that a new building cycle for the ecosystem is beginning.
The hub's opening attracted over 1,500 registrants and featured speakers from the Ethereum Foundation, Animoca Brands, and Hashkey Group. Supported by the Ethereum Foundation’s Ethereum Everywhere initiative, the center is co-operated by the venture capital firm SNZ and the community group ETHTAO. It will host more than 30 Ethereum projects to start, ranging from infrastructure to DeFi.
This focus on scaling and community infrastructure in a key financial center like Hong Kong signals a strategic push towards mass adoption and attracting institutional capital. By addressing core scalability limitations and fostering a physical ecosystem hub, Ethereum aims to solidify its position as the primary platform for decentralized applications and on-chain finance.
From Scaling to AI Agents
Buterin outlined a multi-faceted technical roadmap beyond the 1000x computation goal. He emphasized that Layer 2 solutions should complement, not replicate, the Layer 1, which he sees as the irreplaceable settlement layer. Future scaling, he noted, must encompass both data and computation, while also preparing for long-term challenges like quantum resistance.
Other leaders expanded on the vision for a broader application landscape. Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi described her "philosophy of subtraction," which aims to ensure the ecosystem can operate independently without the Foundation's control. Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands, predicted that AI agents will reshape business models, driving high-frequency, small-value payments that require blockchain for low-cost, real-time settlement.
Hong Kong as a Global Crypto Hub
The establishment of the ETH Hong Kong Hub is a significant step in cementing the city's role as a global digital asset center. Duncan Chiu, a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council for the Technology and Innovation sector, stated that the hub will strengthen the city's position and provide an open platform for global developers.
Unlike temporary conference events, the hub is designed for sustainable, long-term collaboration. It provides a permanent space for developers, entrepreneurs, and institutions to connect, build, and integrate Web2 and Web3 technologies. This initiative, coupled with clearer local regulations, is poised to attract further talent and investment into the region's growing crypto economy.
