President Donald Trump inserted the White House into retail fuel pricing Thursday, announcing the Freedom Fuel Network will lower gasoline prices at 25 stations across the Greater Philadelphia Area on July 3.
"Oil prices are plummeting fast," Trump said in a statement, without citing specific benchmark prices or providing a timeline for the decline. The president framed the discount program as a "birthday gift" to the nation ahead of the July 4 holiday marking America's 250th anniversary.
The Freedom Fuel Network initiative covers 25 retail locations in and around Philadelphia, though the White House did not disclose the per-gallon discount amount, the total cost of the program, or which fuel retailers are participating. The announcement comes as the national average gasoline price stands at $3.46 per gallon, according to AAA data, down 12 cents from a month earlier but still 8 cents above the year-ago level.
WTI crude traded near $78 per barrel Thursday, down roughly 4 percent from a week earlier but within the $75-to-$82 range that has held since April. The president's characterization of prices as "plummeting" exceeds the actual move: front-month WTI futures have declined about 6 percent from their 2026 peak of $83.40 in late May, a modest pullback by historical standards rather than a collapse. Brent crude, the global benchmark, stood at $81.50 per barrel.
The Philadelphia discount program is the latest instance of the Trump administration using executive visibility to influence fuel costs ahead of a major holiday. The White House did not say whether similar discounts would be extended to other cities or whether the program would continue beyond the July 4 weekend. Gasoline demand typically peaks during the summer driving season, with U.S. consumption averaging 9.4 million barrels per day in June, according to the Energy Information Administration.
