Sui Network's mainnet stalled on May 28, halting transactions on the Layer-1 chain that has processed over $1 trillion in stablecoin volume.
"Sui mainnet is currently experiencing a network stall, and our core team is actively working on a fix," the Sui Foundation said on the network's status page. The team did not disclose the root cause or provide an estimated time for resolution.
The outage comes as Sui has positioned itself as a high-throughput alternative to Ethereum and Solana. The network processed over $1 trillion in cumulative stablecoin transfer volume since August 2025, per network data. Built by Mysten Labs — a team with roots in Meta's abandoned Diem project — Sui launched its mainnet on May 3, 2023, and has since introduced gasless stablecoin transfers covering seven assets including USDC.
Network reliability is critical for Sui's payments infrastructure ambitions. The stall could erode confidence among developers and institutional users, particularly after the network recently partnered with Fireblocks to offer gasless stablecoin transfers to enterprise clients. How quickly the team resolves the issue and communicates the post-mortem will determine the extent of any reputational damage.
The SUI token faced selling pressure following the announcement, though exact price data was not immediately available. The incident marks one of the first major public outages for the network since its mainnet launch in May 2023.
The outage highlights operational risks inherent in high-throughput Layer-1 blockchains that prioritize parallel transaction processing. Sui's object-centric data model, built on the Move programming language, enables concurrent execution — a design that differs from Ethereum's sequential model. While this architecture has driven Sui's growth, it also introduces unique failure modes.
Competing networks have faced similar challenges. Solana experienced multiple full-day halts in 2022 and 2023 that weighed on institutional adoption. Sui's ability to recover quickly and transparently will be closely watched by developers evaluating which Layer-1 chain to build on.
