South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI has signed its first multi-year agreement to supply electric vehicle batteries to Mercedes-Benz, with deliveries starting in 2026, a move that strengthens the German automaker’s supply chain and intensifies competition in the European EV market.
"The partnership with Mercedes-Benz is a significant step in our European expansion," a Samsung SDI spokesperson said on Monday.
The deal, announced on April 20, 2026, marks Samsung SDI's first battery supply relationship with the luxury car brand. While financial terms and the total volume of batteries were not disclosed, the agreement is expected to cover a significant portion of the batteries for Mercedes-Benz's next generation of electric vehicles. This diversifies Samsung SDI's customer base, which has historically included companies like BMW and Stellantis.
For Mercedes-Benz, this agreement secures a critical supply of high-performance batteries, mitigating production risks as it scales its EV output to compete with rivals like Tesla and Audi. The deal could boost investor confidence in both firms and puts pressure on other battery suppliers, such as LG Energy Solution and CATL, to secure long-term contracts with major automakers in the increasingly competitive EV landscape.
