Pi Network is preparing a major Mainnet upgrade to create a single, unified consensus engine for all global nodes, according to a company announcement on May 15. The update, which follows the migration of over 16.7 million users to the Mainnet, aims to standardize network activity and security protocols.
"The core objective of this #PiNetwork underlying protocol upgrade is to achieve the standardization and unification of the consensus engine across all network nodes," the PiNetwork DEX account said in a post on X.
The protocol upgrade is a multi-faceted effort targeting several core areas of the network. Key changes include a shift toward more direct peer-to-peer node communication to reduce reliance on central systems. The update will also enhance Byzantine Fault Tolerance systems to better handle faulty nodes and introduce improved anti-double-spending tools. Technical enhancements focus on better block synchronization and increased throughput and peak load capacity to address prior congestion issues. The deadline for the related Protocol Version 23 was recently extended from May 15 to May 19.
This upgrade is a critical step for Pi Network as it seeks to improve performance and scalability for its large user base ahead of a potential open mainnet launch. A successful rollout could bolster network stability and security, addressing technical concerns even as the PI token's price remains under pressure, trading at approximately $0.17 as of May 14, per CoinGecko data.
The move to a standardized consensus mechanism means all nodes will adhere to the same fundamental rules, which is expected to create more consistent data recording and validation. Pi Network plans to integrate its distributed node clusters onto the Mainnet in batches following the upgrade, a phased approach designed to allow for careful monitoring at each stage.
This technical overhaul follows a series of protocol updates, including versions 19.6, 19.9, and 20.2, which laid the groundwork for future smart contract capabilities. The company has also been focused on user verification, recently announcing that over 18.1 million users have completed its full KYC process.
However, the network's development progress contrasts with its token's recent market performance. The PI token has declined 6% over the past week. On-chain data shows a rising supply of PI on centralized exchanges, reaching nearly 540 million tokens, with more than half of that total held on Gate.io. This trend suggests increasing selling pressure from holders moving tokens from self-custody.
The project recently sponsored the Consensus 2026 conference, where co-founders Dr. Chengdiao Fan and Dr. Nicolas Kokkalis discussed the role of verifiable human identity in the age of AI, a core principle of the Pi Network's one-person-one-account philosophy.
