(Bloomberg) -- OpenAI on Thursday unveiled GPT-5.5, a new flagship model that significantly expands its context window to 256,000 tokens and integrates multimodal inputs, escalating the artificial intelligence arms race with rival Anthropic PBC. The model is designed to handle complex, multi-part tasks with minimal instruction, a key feature for enterprise customers.
"Instead of carefully managing every step, you can give GPT-5.5 a messy, multi-part task and trust it to plan, use tools, check its work, navigate through ambiguity, and keep going," OpenAI said in its announcement. Co-founder Greg Brockman added that the model is “extremely” good at coding and debugging.
The new model builds on the architecture of GPT-5.4 but offers a major leap in capabilities. Its 256,000-token context window allows for the processing of entire books or lengthy documents in a single prompt. GPT-5.5 also unifies the handling of text, images, audio, and video, a shift from previous models that required separate systems for different data types.
The release of GPT-5.5 is a direct challenge to Anthropic, which recently released its own powerful model, Claude Opus 4.7. Both companies are vying for dominance in the lucrative enterprise AI space, with a focus on developing sophisticated AI agents that can automate complex workflows. The move also comes just days before a high-profile trial between Elon Musk and OpenAI executives is set to begin.
Agent-Based Workflows and Unified Architecture
A primary focus of GPT-5.5 is its advanced agent-based functionality. The model can execute tasks step-by-step, using tools like web browsers and code interpreters to perform research, write and debug code, and interact with various applications. This allows the AI to function more like an autonomous agent, capable of completing complex projects that previously required significant human oversight.
This enhanced capability is made possible by a more integrated architecture. Unlike its predecessors, GPT-5.5 processes diverse data types within a single, unified system. This not only improves efficiency but also allows for more natural and seamless user interactions, particularly in scenarios involving mixed-media inputs. The model will be available to users on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise ChatGPT tiers.
AI Arms Race Heats Up
The launch of GPT-5.5 highlights the intensifying competition between OpenAI and Anthropic, with both companies backed by major tech giants like Microsoft and Google, respectively. The rapid succession of model releases—from Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.7 and Mythos Preview to OpenAI's GPT-5.4-Cyber and now GPT-5.5—points to a fierce battle for market leadership in AI. This competition is increasingly centered on enterprise applications, coding assistants, and cybersecurity, which are seen as major revenue drivers.
