OpenAI's ChatGPT advertising business reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, as the AI company expands self-service ad buying across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
"Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives, and ads are always separate and clearly labeled," OpenAI said in the January announcement authored by Fidji Simo, who laid out the principles governing the ads business. The company says it keeps user conversations private from advertisers and never sells user data.
The platform is now used by tens of thousands of advertisers across more than 40 countries, OpenAI said. Self-service access through Ads Manager, introduced in May, is available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. Cost-per-click and outcome-optimized bidding now account for the majority of campaigns, while the company's Pixel and Conversions API anchor measurement. OpenAI cited an ecommerce advertiser that achieved a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days and a technology partner that reported more than 80 percent of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers.
The milestone shows how OpenAI is converting its 1 billion weekly active users into a diversified revenue base spanning consumer subscriptions, enterprise offerings and usage-based APIs. The company closed a $110 billion funding round in February at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, with projected annual revenue of $12.7 billion. Advertising gives OpenAI a direct line into a market long dominated by Google and Meta, which earned more than $60 billion last year.
OpenAI describes advertising as one pillar of a diversified business model that also includes consumer subscriptions, enterprise offerings and usage-based APIs. The company says these offerings together support an advertising-supported free tier that helps keep ChatGPT available to more than 1 billion weekly active users.
The client base is becoming increasingly global, with advertisers outside the United States representing a growing share of revenue, and many of its largest clients now use ChatGPT Ads to reach potential customers across multiple markets. OpenAI began with a managed-sales, agency and partner-led model and has since expanded its network to more than 50 technology and measurement partners.
The ads system uses the context of the current conversation to show an ad relevant to what a user is exploring and, depending on the country and a user's settings, may also use context from the broader ChatGPT experience. OpenAI says the measures it tracks across trust, relevance and overall experience have remained strong throughout the global rollout.
The milestone intensifies competition in digital advertising, where Google and Meta have long dominated. Snap's chief business officer Ajit Mohan recently noted that advertisers are looking beyond Google and Meta as concerns over dependence on the two platforms grow, a dynamic that could benefit OpenAI as it expands its ad business.
OpenAI's next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT Ads to more markets and introduce additional formats, objectives, buying options and measurement capabilities. The company also says it will explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways within ChatGPT.
For investors, the question is whether OpenAI can sustain the growth trajectory. The ads business reached the $1 billion run rate in under 200 days, a pace that, if maintained, would make it one of the fastest-growing advertising platforms. OpenAI's $110 billion funding round and $730 billion pre-money valuation suggest the market already prices in substantial monetization of its user base, but the ads business adds a new revenue stream that could support the advertising-supported free tier keeping ChatGPT accessible to more than 1 billion weekly active users.
