A 20-year-old male suspect is in custody after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the $27 million San Francisco home of OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman, an incident that highlights escalating tensions surrounding artificial intelligence. The attack, which caused a fire on an exterior gate, was followed by threats made by the same individual at the company's headquarters.
"Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt," an OpenAI spokesperson said. "We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe."
San Francisco Police Department officers responded to a fire investigation at a North Beach residence at approximately 4:12 a.m. local time. Less than an hour later, at around 5:07 a.m., officers were called to OpenAI's office where a man was threatening to burn the building down. The police realized the man matched the description of the suspect from the earlier attack and arrested him.
The incident comes as public sentiment towards AI has soured, with increasing criticism directed at major AI firms. In response to the attack, Altman stated he underestimated the public's fear of AI and called for the decentralization of technological power to prevent its concentration in a few institutions. He described the race for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as a "struggle for power." This event adds a new layer of social and political risk for companies heavily invested in AI, including major partner Microsoft, potentially affecting investor sentiment across the sector. The attack on Altman's home is part of a larger trend of rising violence against public figures and executives, prompting companies like Meta, Alphabet, and Nvidia to spend millions more on security for their chief executives in 2024.
