Okta Establishes India Data Residency for Early 2026
Identity security firm Okta, Inc. announced on January 16, 2026, that it is launching in-country platform tenants in India to provide local data residency and enhanced disaster recovery. Hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the new infrastructure will allow Indian organizations to store identity data within the country's borders. The capability is designed for companies that require local storage to meet internal policies or regulatory mandates. Both new and existing Okta customers will be able to deploy on the India region infrastructure in early 2026.
Expansion Addresses Security Gap as 91% of Firms Adopt AI
The strategic expansion directly addresses the security challenges created by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence. According to Okta's research, while 91% of organizations are already using AI agents, only 10% have a well-developed strategy for managing non-human identities. Okta aims to bridge this divide by providing a unified identity security fabric that manages every identity, from human employees to AI agents. This central control plane is intended to help businesses defend against emerging AI-powered cyber threats and embrace innovation with greater confidence and compliance.
New Service Enables Compliance With India's DPDP Act
Okta's investment is crucial for businesses in highly regulated sectors such as banking, financial services, insurance (BFSI), and healthcare. The ability to store data locally helps these organizations meet governance requirements, including those guided by India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. By offering a local solution, Okta is positioning itself as a foundational partner for trust and compliance in the Indian market.
As Indian enterprises accelerate their digital transformation, securing every identity, human or AI has become mission-critical. Okta provides the identity security fabric that enables this trust, helping organisations in regulated sectors like Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) and healthcare protect sensitive data and identities within India’s borders.
