OceanaGold Corporation (TSX: OGC) announced significant high-grade gold results from six new drill holes at its Wharekirauponga project in New Zealand, confirming the continuity of a key mineralized zone. The results are from an ongoing exploration and resource conversion program approximately 10 kilometers north of the company's Waihi operation.
"Today's drill results from Wharekirauponga continue to demonstrate the upside of this exceptional orebody," Gerard Bond, President and CEO of OceanaGold, said. The company's focus is on converting inferred resources to the indicated category to support future feasibility studies.
The drilling targeted the EG Vein, with the most significant intercept returning 14.9 meters at an estimated true width of 16.3 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold. Other notable results included 5.4 meters at 25.8 g/t gold and 5.5 meters at 24.1 g/t gold, reinforcing the potential of the Southern High-Grade Zone. These results provide greater confidence in the geological model and the continuity of high-grade mineralization.
The confirmation of extensive high-grade gold zones is critical for OceanaGold as it advances the Wharekirauponga project. High-grade intercepts can significantly increase a project's potential economics, which is a key factor for future development decisions. For comparison, many profitable gold mines operate on grades below 5 g/t, making intercepts over 15 g/t particularly noteworthy for the sector. The company will incorporate these results into its next Mineral Resource and Reserve estimate.
