The Morpho Association paused the MORPHO token's OFT cross-chain bridge on the Arbitrum network, a precautionary measure following a security incident involving other decentralized finance protocols. The suspension affects only the Arbitrum bridge, with the token's functionality on the Ethereum mainnet remaining unchanged.
"As a precautionary measure following the recent rsETH event involving Kelp DAO and the LayerZero Bridge, the Morpho Association has paused the MORPHO OFT bridge on Arbitrum," the protocol's developers said in a statement.
The issue stems from an exploit related to Kelp DAO's restaked ETH token, rsETH. While Morpho itself was not directly exploited, its reliance on the same cross-chain infrastructure provided by LayerZero created a potential vulnerability. This forced the protocol to sever the connection to Arbitrum to prevent any spillover effects from the initial incident.
The suspension underscores the growing contagion risk within the highly interconnected DeFi ecosystem. An issue in one protocol can force others to take protective measures, potentially fragmenting token liquidity and reducing user confidence in the security of cross-chain bridges, which are vital for transferring assets between different blockchains.
Contagion Risk in DeFi
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the systemic risks present in the DeFi space. Protocols are often built on top of each other, creating complex dependencies that are not always apparent to users. While this composability is a key driver of innovation, it also means that a single point of failure can have cascading effects across multiple platforms.
In this case, the vulnerability was not in Morpho's own code but in a shared piece of infrastructure. The suspension of the Arbitrum bridge may lead to temporary liquidity challenges for MORPHO token holders on that specific layer-two network and could inconvenience users who rely on the bridge for cross-chain transfers. The event highlights the need for rigorous security audits not only of a protocol's own smart contracts but also of all the external protocols and bridges it integrates with.
