Meituan is stepping into the competitive AI-powered healthcare sector with its new "Xiaotuan Health Steward," a move that leverages its vast user base and delivery infrastructure to challenge established players and carve out a new revenue stream. The product, announced at the Wuzhen Health Conference, aims to integrate AI-driven health consultations with the company's core on-demand services.
"By connecting AI-driven initial consultations with our established pharmaceutical delivery network, we are creating a uniquely complete and efficient healthcare experience for families," a Meituan spokesperson said. "This is a natural extension of our mission to help people eat better and live better."
The "Xiaotuan Health Steward" offers a range of services, including basic medical advice, health consultations, and management of family health records. A key feature is its ability to intelligently interpret medical examination reports, providing users with actionable health insights. The system is designed to create a seamless user journey, allowing a user in a dialogue to transition directly to purchasing medicine online, booking an online consultation with a doctor, or scheduling an in-person medical appointment.
This strategic entry pits Meituan directly against digital health giants like Alibaba Health Information Technology Ltd. and JD Health International Inc., which have already invested heavily in online medical services and pharmaceutical e-commerce. The "Health Card" paid membership service, which offers cash back on over 1,000 drugs, including more than 300 original brand-name medications, is a direct challenge to the loyalty programs of these incumbents. The move could intensify competition, potentially pressuring profit margins across the sector as companies vie for market share in China's rapidly growing digital health market, where players like Ping An Good Doctor also compete.
