MAOYAN ENT (01896.HK) shares rose 1.8 percent after Citi said the company will benefit from distributing Stephen Chow's upcoming film "Kung Fu Soccer."
Citi, in a research report dated July 6, said the July 11 premiere of the film is positive for MAOYAN ENT. The brokerage noted that MAOYAN ENT is the film's main distributor and one of its producers, giving it exposure to both distribution revenue and production returns.
"Kung Fu Soccer" marks Chow's first directorial release in seven years, following 2019's "The New King of Comedy." The film is a spiritual successor to Chow's 2001 hit "Shaolin Soccer" and features an all-women football team integrating martial arts into their game. The cast includes Zhang Xiaofei, Lay Zhang, Dilraba Dilmurat, Carina Lau, and Japanese actor Takeru Satoh.
The film will debut in China on July 11, with Encore Films handling distribution outside mainland China. MAOYAN Entertainment will oversee domestic distribution. The release comes during the World Cup season, potentially boosting audience interest in a soccer-themed comedy.
MAOYAN ENT shares traded at HK$5.12 as of Monday's close, giving the company a market value of about HK$5.8 billion. Short selling volume totaled HK$11.8 million, representing 10.5 percent of turnover, according to exchange data.
The film's box office performance in its opening weekend will be a key test for MAOYAN ENT's distribution segment. The company's revenue is closely tied to the performance of films it distributes, and a strong showing from "Kung Fu Soccer" could provide a near-term earnings catalyst. Investors will watch presales and opening-day figures starting July 11.
