Shares of Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (KTOS) surged more than 10 percent on Monday after Jefferies upgraded the stock to Buy from Hold, citing strong demand for its drone and missile technologies.
"The bull case is bolstered by missile demand," Jefferies analyst Sheila Kahyaoglu said in a note to clients. The firm maintained its $85 price target, which suggested a 26 percent upside from Friday's closing price.
Kahyaoglu projects Kratos sales will grow 28 percent in 2026 to $1.7 billion, followed by another 20 percent growth in 2027 to $2.1 billion. This growth is expected to be boosted by production increases for the Valkyrie Tactical Drone, an autonomous aircraft designed to fly alongside crewed fighter jets like the F-35. The company's role in producing parts for solid rocket motors and hypersonic technologies was also a key factor in the upgrade.
The stock closed Monday's session up 10.1% at $74.09. The move comes amid a heightened focus on unmanned systems and missile capabilities by global militaries, influenced by ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Iran. President Donald Trump's recent proposal for a $1.5 trillion defense budget for fiscal 2027, a 44% increase, has also drawn investor attention to the sector.
Valuation and Outlook
Despite the stock's 142% gain over the past 12 months, shares were down 11% for the year before Monday's rally, providing what Jefferies saw as an attractive entry point. Even with the recent surge, the stock trades at a steep 87 times estimated 2026 earnings, according to FactSet data.
Wall Street remains broadly positive on the company, with 81% of analysts covering Kratos rating the shares a Buy. The average analyst price target sits near $119, considerably higher than the Jefferies target. A discounted cash flow model from Simply Wall St places the intrinsic value around $82 per share, suggesting the stock was about 14% undervalued relative to its price before the jump.
The upgrade highlights growing confidence in Kratos's ability to capitalize on increased defense spending on autonomous systems. Investors will watch for execution on the Valkyrie program and further contract wins to justify the stock's high valuation. The company's next major update is expected during its upcoming quarterly earnings report.
