Chinese battery manufacturer Hithium has formalized a €1.3 billion investment to construct a new battery cell factory in Navarre, Spain, aiming to bolster Europe’s renewable energy infrastructure and challenge established Asian market leaders.
"This project is a significant step for the green industrialization of our country," Spanish President Pedro Sánchez said at the signing ceremony, highlighting the government's support for building a local battery supply chain.
The factory, slated to begin operations in 2026, will be located in the Navarre region. The investment commitment was signed by Hithium representatives and the President of Navarre, María Chivite, solidifying a plan that aligns with Spain's PERTE VEC II, a national program to promote the electric and connected vehicle industry.
Hithium's investment strengthens Europe's energy independence by localizing a critical part of the battery supply chain. The move is expected to create numerous jobs and could positively impact stocks related to Hithium's European partners and raw material suppliers, signaling a favorable investment climate in Spain's green technology sector.
The new facility will specialize in the production of battery cells for stationary energy storage, a crucial element for ensuring grid stability as the continent increasingly relies on intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind. This focus differentiates it from other gigafactories centered primarily on electric vehicle batteries. The project represents a significant foreign investment in Spain's burgeoning green technology sector, which has been actively courting international partners to build out its domestic capabilities.
This move places Hithium in direct competition with other major players in the European battery market, such as Sweden's Northvolt and China's CATL, which have also announced significant investments in the region. The support from the Spanish government, both at the national and regional level, was a key factor in Hithium's decision, providing a stable and encouraging framework for the large-scale project. The factory's output will be essential for meeting the European Union's ambitious climate and energy storage goals.
