Hitachi is partnering with Anthropic to integrate frontier AI into mission-critical physical systems, training roughly one-third of its global workforce on the startup's Claude models to accelerate its push into industrial AI. The alliance aims to combine Hitachi's 110 years of operational technology expertise with Anthropic's AI capabilities, targeting sectors like energy, transportation, and manufacturing.
"Through this strategic partnership, Hitachi can jointly solve customer and social challenges by combining Anthropic's highly trusted AI technology with Hitachi's domain expertise in mission-critical areas," Jun Abe, Executive Vice President at Hitachi, said. "We will accelerate transformation at our customers' frontlines and promote true Digital Transformation in the real world."
The partnership involves a massive internal transformation for Hitachi, which it calls a "Customer Zero" initiative. The company will deploy Anthropic's Claude AI across its approximately 290,000 employees and launch a joint talent program to cultivate about 100,000 AI professionals. To lead the effort, the companies are launching a "Frontier AI Deployment Center" with an initial team of 100 experts, expected to grow to 300.
The move positions Hitachi's ¥10.6 trillion "Lumada 3.0" business to capture the growing demand for AI in physical infrastructure. By embedding AI into industrial operations, Hitachi aims to enhance system engineering, cybersecurity, and operational efficiency, creating a significant new revenue stream while competing with other technology giants pushing AI into the enterprise and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) markets.
Hitachi's 'Customer Zero' Overhaul
The core of the strategy is for Hitachi to become its own first and largest customer. By deploying Claude across its 290,000-person workforce, the company plans to enhance productivity in software engineering, automate hardware maintenance processes, and improve efficiency in corporate functions like sales and planning.
The insights and best practices gained from this internal overhaul will be used to refine HMAX by Hitachi, the company's suite of AI solutions for social infrastructure. The large-scale talent development program aims to embed AI skills deep within the organization, turning a significant portion of its workforce into what it calls "AI professional talent."
Targeting Critical Infrastructure with Claude
The partnership will focus on applying Anthropic's AI to four key sectors: energy, transportation, manufacturing, and finance. By combining Claude's advanced code generation and analysis with Hitachi's system engineering knowledge, the companies aim to improve the quality and efficiency of customer system development.
A major focus will be on enhancing cybersecurity for these critical sectors. Hitachi's Cyber Center of Excellence will work with Anthropic to improve cyber threat detection and response, strengthening the resilience of infrastructure like power grids and financial networks against attacks. For industrial clients, the integration promises more intuitive equipment management using natural language and optimized maintenance schedules to reduce downtime and costs.
New Center to Drive Global Deployment
The "Frontier AI Deployment Center" will act as the central engine for the partnership. With hubs in North America, Europe, and Asia, the center will bring together Anthropic's AI experts with Hitachi's specialists in IT, OT, and cybersecurity. This joint team will be responsible for co-creating physical AI use cases, deploying the technology in real-world settings, and developing next-generation solutions for Hitachi's global clients in over 190 countries.
