Vitalik Buterin's new "strawmap" proposes the biggest Ethereum rebuild since the Merge, targeting 10,000 TPS on the base chain and quantum-resistant cryptography within four years.
Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin on July 4 released a draft roadmap calling for the network's largest technical overhaul since the 2022 Merge, targeting 10,000 transactions per second on the base chain.
"This is a fundamental rebuild of nearly every core technical element of the chain over the next three to four years," Buterin said in the strawmap document, which sets five "north stars" for Ethereum's development.
The roadmap targets transaction finality within seconds, 10,000 TPS on the base chain and 10 million TPS on layer-2 networks. Two additional goals — quantum-resistant cryptography and native privacy features — will add data overhead to every block, creating tension with the throughput targets.
The overhaul comes as Ethereum faces mounting competitive pressure from high-performance layer-1 rivals and its own tokenomics shift. ETH supply turned mildly net inflationary in 2026 as layer-2 scaling reduced base-chain fee revenue, and the coin trades 62% below its all-time high with the crypto bear market roughly nine months old.
Privacy and Quantum Security Complicate the Scaling Math
The strawmap's dual emphasis on throughput and cryptographic hardening creates an inherent trade-off. Quantum-resistant signatures and zero-knowledge privacy primitives both increase per-transaction data requirements, directly conflicting with the goal of pushing more activity onto the base chain. Buterin has long advocated for privacy as a core Ethereum feature, sketching an anonymous billboard concept using zero-knowledge proofs in a 2022 essay and recently building a working demo on Aztec, a privacy-focused network built on Ethereum's cryptography.
Buterin's side projects have drawn attention as ETH struggles to regain momentum. He built the anonymous billboard prototype using "vibe coding" — describing the intended behavior in plain language and letting AI tools write much of the code. The demo, posted to GitHub under the repository name aztec_experiments, includes three working prototypes: a token contract, a voting oracle, and the billboard itself, which uses cryptographic nullifiers built with the poseidon2 hashing method to confirm posting rights without revealing identity.
The timing sharpens the contrast between technical development and market performance. Ether has traded well below its prior cycle highs this year, and Wall Street's bull case for ETH has drawn more attention than any single protocol upgrade. Buterin appeared unbothered by the gap, choosing cryptography experiments over marketing Ethereum's price narrative.
For ETH holders, the strawmap presents a paradox. The rebuild could attract more users and capital to the network, but activity growth does not automatically enrich token holders. The base fee burn mechanism depends on mainnet congestion rather than total throughput, and pushing more activity to layer-2 chains has already shrunk fee revenue enough to flip Ethereum's supply to net inflationary. Individual token contracts could see their fees drop further under the rebuild, benefiting users and layer-2 chains without directly helping ETH holders.
Still, the coin looks likelier to grind higher than lower from here, largely for reasons unrelated to the roadmap. The crypto bear market is roughly nine months old, near the historical median, and ETH's 62% drawdown from its all-time high suggests a reversion to the mean may be due. Buterin's strawmap will make Ethereum more interesting as a technology, but its tokenomics may need to change before that translates into investment returns.
