Eli Lilly and Company will invest an additional $4.5 billion into its manufacturing sites in Lebanon, Indiana, bringing its total commitment in the state to over $21 billion since 2020 and launching its first factory dedicated to genetic medicines.
"Lilly's legacy of firsts in Indiana continues today,” David A. Ricks, Lilly’s chair and CEO, said in a statement. “From genetic medicines that could one day prevent disease at its source, to Foundayo, a pill making weight loss treatment accessible to millions, we are not just discovering the medicines of the future—we are building the world's most advanced plants to make them.”
The investment supports two key facilities in Lebanon. The first is the new Lilly Lebanon Advanced Therapies site, the company’s first plant designed for the research and commercial-scale production of genetic medicines. The second is an expansion of the Lilly Lebanon Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) site, which will support the manufacturing of blockbuster weight-loss drugs Zepbound and Mounjaro, as well as the recently approved daily pill Foundayo (orforglipron) and the investigational triple-hormone therapy retatrutide.
The massive capital injection solidifies Indiana’s role as a hub for the life sciences industry. A report from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business noted that Lilly accounts for 70 percent of the state's pharmaceutical GDP. The report also found that every one job at Lilly supports more than two additional jobs elsewhere in the state.
Economic Impact Reverberates Across Indiana
State and local officials lauded the announcement as a landmark event for Indiana's economy, reinforcing its partnership with the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical giant.
“With this investment in Lebanon and across the state, Indiana is reinforcing its position as a prime destination for life sciences and advanced manufacturing,” Governor Mike Braun said. “Together, we are helping lead the future of medicine while creating high-quality jobs.”
Mayor Matt Gentry of Lebanon called the investment a “testament to the strength of our local workforce,” ensuring the city’s prominence in the industry for decades. According to the economic report, for every dollar Lilly spends locally, it generates up to four dollars in additional economic activity, signaling a significant stimulus for the region.
The investment underscores Lilly's strategic pivot to dominate the next generation of high-value therapies, from GLP-1 weight-loss drugs to genetic treatments. Investors will be closely watching for the full opening of the API production site in 2027, which is projected to be the largest of its kind in U.S. history and a key catalyst for the company's long-term growth.
