Cypherpunk launched the world's largest Zcash mining fleet, deploying 4.2 GSol/s of hashrate, about 18 percent of the network, via a $33.33 million Winklevoss deal.
"Up until now, investors have had limited options for Zcash mining exposure. With the acquisition of this mining fleet, Cypherpunk changes that," Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss said.
The fleet, acquired from Moria Mining LLC and Winklevoss Treasury Investments, consists of latest-generation Z15 Pro machines with related hosting agreements, deployed across U.S.-based facilities. The purchase price was settled by issuing a pre-funded warrant to Winklevoss Treasury Investments to buy 43,290,042 Cypherpunk shares at $0.001 each, implying a $0.77 per-share price. Cypherpunk shares rose 9.52 percent to $0.7053, while ZEC slipped 1.11 percent.
The operation gives Cypherpunk, already the largest corporate holder of ZEC with 323,394.38 tokens, about 1.92 percent of circulating supply, a path to its 5 percent target at production costs below spot. With roughly 43,800 ZEC awarded to miners monthly, the fleet accesses an addressable market valued at over $250 million a year at current prices.
Treasury and network security
Cypherpunk Mining now sits alongside the company's ZEC treasury and its investment in ZODL, the most widely used Zcash wallet. The added hashrate strengthens Zcash network security through decentralization, and a more secure network makes Cypherpunk's holdings more valuable, Chief Investment Officer Will McEvoy said. "The Zcash flow from Cypherpunk Mining provides financial and operational flexibility to fund future growth, the acquisition of additional ZEC, and new privacy-preserving technology investments."
Kevin Zhang takes the helm
Kevin Zhang joins as head of mining after more than a decade at the front lines of Bitcoin and Zcash. Zhang began mining Bitcoin in 2014 and Zcash in 2016, built several of the largest Bitcoin mining facilities in North America, and at Foundry built the largest Bitcoin mining pool in the world. "Approximately 1,440 ZEC is awarded to miners each day, making Zcash mining highly profitable," Zhang said. "The opportunity in Zcash mining shows a striking similarity to Bitcoin mining in 2016."
The deal marks one of the largest single consolidations of Zcash network hashrate under a Nasdaq-listed company, following Cypherpunk's April expansion of its ZEC treasury. The equity-based structure, funded by a pre-funded warrant rather than cash, preserves Cypherpunk's balance sheet while giving Winklevoss Capital a stake in the privacy-technology company. Cypherpunk also continues to develop cancer therapies through its Leap Therapeutics subsidiary.
