Shares of Constellation Brands (STZ) surged more than 8 percent after the company reported signs of a rebound in beer sales to its core Hispanic consumer base.
"Modelo has gained market share in both dollar sales and volume over the last four weeks," CEO Bill Newlands said on the company's earnings call, suggesting a return to a "more traditional share gaining position."
The beverage company beat analyst expectations for fiscal fourth-quarter sales and earnings, driven by a 1 percent year-over-year increase in beer sales, the first such growth in several quarters. However, Constellation issued lower-than-expected guidance for fiscal 2027 and withdrew its 2028 estimates, citing economic uncertainty.
The stock's 8.53 percent gain puts it on track for its largest daily increase since November 2020. The sales recovery in a key demographic that accounts for half its beer customers has encouraged investors, especially with the upcoming World Cup expected to bolster beer sales.
Constellation has been closely tracking performance by zip codes with varying levels of Hispanic population. Newlands noted that in the latest quarter, all areas with significant Hispanic populations showed improving sales trends for the Modelo brand, with particularly strong results in California.
The company also highlighted the growing appeal of its Victoria beer among younger Hispanic consumers between 21 and 25 years old. "We’ve seen many times over the course of time that new generations will find a brand that they would like to make their own,” Newlands said.
The positive report suggests a potential turnaround for the company, which had seen softer alcohol sales amid weaker spending from Hispanic consumers grappling with affordability issues. The guidance revision indicates continued caution, but the underlying sales trend provides a new data point for investors. The company's next earnings report will be a key indicator of whether the rebound is sustainable.
