A new Citi Research report on Chinese AI adoption reveals a market at a critical inflection point, characterized by wide but shallow use, where ByteDance’s Doubao has captured a commanding 79% user penetration. The findings suggest that while daily engagement is high, an acceleration in deep integration is imminent, promising significant impacts on economic efficiency and corporate earnings.
"The behavior of heavy users signals a clear acceleration is coming," the Citi Research Innovation Lab noted in its March 2026 report. "The inflection point for AI to deeply integrate into economic life is approaching, and its substantial impact on efficiency, the labor market, and corporate profits is expected to be released at a faster pace."
The survey of 1,800 users shows that while 70% use AI chatbots daily, the average time spent is just 49 minutes, with a mere 5% of users exceeding two hours a day. ByteDance’s Doubao leads with a 79% penetration rate and a 54.4 Net Promoter Score (NPS). It is followed by Tencent’s Yuanbao at 42% penetration and a 28.3 NPS, and DeepSeek, which showed a strong performance with 37% penetration and a 36.1 NPS despite limited marketing.
This adoption pattern, even in its early stages, translates to a potential 1.8% efficiency gain for the entire Chinese economy, according to Citi's initial calculations. As user trust and application complexity grow in a positive feedback loop, the report anticipates that productivity gains will accelerate, creating a significant tailwind for the valuations of leading platforms like ByteDance and Tencent.
High Penetration Masks Shallow Use
The report’s findings align with macro data from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), which reported 602 million generative AI users by the end of 2025. However, this large user base spends just six minutes per day with the technology on average. Economically, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) reported that AI core industry revenue was approximately 1.2 trillion yuan in 2025, just 0.9% of China's GDP. Citi's survey reinforces this "high penetration, shallow use" picture, with 83% of respondents using AI for less than an hour daily.
Platform Wars Show Early Differentiation
While ByteDance’s Doubao dominates in user numbers, driven by its speed and ease of use, competitors are carving out distinct niches. According to the survey, users favor Tencent’s Yuanbao for its trustworthiness (57% of users), while DeepSeek earned recognition for its accuracy (66%) and logical reasoning (58%). Alibaba’s Qwen (Tongyi) leads in creative and emotional tasks. This differentiation suggests the market is unlikely to be a "winner-take-all" scenario, allowing platforms like Alibaba and Tencent to leverage their existing ecosystems to expand their AI footprint. The report also noted that 45% of users have tried non-domestic products like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, seeking better functionality and accuracy.
Monetization Potential Exceeds Expectations
Despite 58% of users preferring to remain on free tiers, a significant 45% are willing to pay for advanced AI capabilities, signaling a clear path to monetization. The primary drivers for paying are access to more advanced models (63%), multimodal features (53%), and faster responses (51%). The average acceptable monthly subscription price among these users was 48.3 yuan, a figure higher than typical video or music streaming services and comparable to spending on online games. This suggests that users applying AI to more complex tasks have a strong willingness to pay, potentially supporting higher average revenue per user (ARPU) than many digital content verticals.
