BYD Co. launched a 2026 edition of its best-selling Seagull electric vehicle, making high-end LiDAR sensors and advanced driver-assist features available for under 100,000 yuan ($14,700) for the first time and intensifying the EV price war.
"The Seagull brand gets a stylish upgrade and a new look! 2026 Seagull gets more features, same price,” the company said in a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, confirming the new version would launch with no increase to its base price.
The new Seagull, which starts at just 69,900 yuan ($10,300) for the base "Vitality Edition," now offers BYD's "God's Eye B" smart driving system as an option on its mid- and high-tier trims. The 305 km range "Freedom" edition with the LiDAR package is priced at 90,900 yuan ($13,400), while the top-tier 405 km "Flying" edition with the system costs 97,900 yuan ($14,400). The system, which BYD calls DiPilot 300, enables Navigate on Autopilot (NOA) in both city and highway environments.
The inclusion of LiDAR on a mass-market vehicle challenges a long-held industry assumption that the technology was too expensive for budget cars, a stance that led automakers like BMW and Mercedes to abandon it on some models. By integrating the feature into its cheapest car, BYD puts pressure on domestic rivals like Geely's Xingyuan and global leader Tesla to either match the feature set or compete more aggressively on price.
Democratizing Advanced Driving Tech
BYD's God's Eye B system is a significant technology offering for a vehicle in the A00-class. It utilizes the roof-mounted LiDAR in conjunction with 12 cameras, five millimeter-wave radars, and a dozen ultrasonic sensors to power its City Navigation On Autopilot (CNOA) functions. According to BYD, the system can handle complex urban scenarios, including traffic light recognition, obstacle avoidance, and navigating roundabouts.
The Seagull was BYD's top-selling pure EV in 2025, with nearly 450,000 units delivered. By adding premium features without raising the base price, BYD is defending its market share against a wave of low-cost domestic competitors. The move is expected to accelerate the adoption of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) across the board, making the technology accessible to a much wider audience.
Global Ambitions and Market Impact
While the LiDAR-equipped models are currently for the Chinese market, the Seagull's global footprint means the technology could soon appear in international markets. The car is sold as the Dolphin Mini in Latin America and is slated for an Australian release as the Atto 1. The Australian Atto 1, with pre-orders starting under $24,000, is slightly longer than the Chinese Seagull and does not yet include the advanced ADAS suite.
The 2026 Seagull is powered by a single front-mounted motor producing 55 kW (73 hp). It is available with two battery options: a 30.08 kWh pack providing 305 km (190 miles) of CLTC range, and a larger 38.88 kWh battery for 405 km (251 miles) of range. The interior also receives an upgrade, featuring a new 12.8-inch floating infotainment screen with BYD's DiLink 150 smart cockpit. The car's small footprint, shorter than a Kia Picanto, makes it ideal for urban commuting, but the addition of highway-capable NOA expands its utility.
