BYD (01211.HK) has launched two new Seal models, intensifying the electric vehicle price and technology war with features including five-minute charging and a 300-kilometer plug-in hybrid range, at prices starting from just ¥111,900 (approximately $15,500).
The company announced the simultaneous launch of the all-electric 2026 Seal 06GT and the 2026 Seal 06DM-i Touring Edition plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The aggressive pricing, with the 06GT priced from ¥128,900 to ¥169,900 and the 06DM-i from ¥111,900 to ¥139,900, directly challenges established EV and hybrid models from competitors.
The Seal 06GT is equipped with BYD's second-generation Blade Battery and proprietary flash-charging technology. The company states the vehicle can charge from 10 to 70 percent in just five minutes and to 97 percent in nine minutes. The Seal 06DM-i is BYD's first PHEV to offer a pure electric range of up to 300 kilometers, with a 200-kilometer option also available. It can charge from 30 to 80 percent in 20 minutes.
This launch could significantly increase BYD's market share by offering advanced technology at mass-market prices, putting pressure on rivals like Tesla. The 06GT's capabilities are timed to leverage BYD's rapid charging infrastructure expansion, while the 06DM-i's extended electric range could capture a segment of buyers not yet ready for a pure EV.
Flash Charging Meets Aggressive Infrastructure
The Seal 06GT's five-minute charging capability is a direct result of BYD's strategy to build out a network of high-speed, MW-level charging stations. The company recently announced the activation of its 5,000th public flash charging station in China, a network built in just one month. This contrasts with Tesla's approach in the US, which is deploying V4 Supercharger assemblies with a maximum output of 150 kW per pile when split between its eight stalls. BYD's single T-shaped pile has a maximum output of 1,500 kW, enabling the rapid charging speeds advertised for the new Seal 06GT. The company is also planning to roll out 3,000 similar stations in Europe, suggesting the 06GT is a key part of its global export strategy.
New Benchmark for Plug-in Hybrids
The Seal 06DM-i Touring Edition sets a new standard for plug-in hybrids. Its 300-kilometer (186-mile) pure electric range under CLTC standards covers the daily driving needs of most commuters, allowing them to operate almost exclusively on cheaper electric power while retaining a gasoline engine for long-distance trips. This significantly exceeds the electric range of most PHEVs on the market, which typically offer between 50 to 100 kilometers. By offering a compelling alternative to both pure EVs and traditional hybrids, BYD is targeting a wider customer base and further pressuring other automakers to advance their own PHEV technology.
